2017 - Girl
GIRL was a co-production with DVPC (Domestic Violence Prevention Centre) on the Gold Coast. It was a project aimed at highlighting the attitudes and behaviors that contribute to domestic violence and more specifically how these attitudes and behaviors are perpetrated by young people from a very young age.
By creating a relationship between the two organisations we were able to start discussions with young people about how we might stop the violence through a more comprehensive and targeted educational program. After a number of community consultations facilitated by Goat Track Theatre and DVPC, we worked with 30 young people to unpack the Cycle Of Domestic Violence and developed an engaging and powerful dramatic response to the subject called GIRL.
GIRL followed the story of one young teenage girl who was in a relationship that turned abusive. The production was Brechtian in style clearly highlighted the Cycle Of Domestic Violence outlined in the DVPC Purple Book.
GIRL performed to over 200 people across two evenings on Tamborine Mountain and Helensvale. It was followed by a Q&A and Forum Theatre piece where audiences tried to use some of the tactics explored by DVPC to disarm domestic violence.
