Great Culture
Goat Track Theatre has won lots of awards as a company in our thirteen years but the one that has meant the most was the national award for ‘Best Team and Culture.’ It was a significant accolade because everything we do at Goat Track is a team effort. At the time we received this award I was asked what I thought defines great team and culture and my response is the same today as it was then.
Good team and culture is when you hear about the values and aspirations of a tribe and you join the tribe to be a part of that mission because you want those things for yourself. And there are a group of people who come together for that purpose driven by a leader.
Great team and culture is when you don’t just want those things for yourself. You want those things for everyone around you and the world at large. And it’s not just the leader driving the purpose, it’s the group itself.
In the ‘Goat Track’ context this means that we don’t just celebrate our child and their growth, we celebrate all children’s growth. We don’t just seek confidence, creativity, connection and care for our child but for all children.
We have young people who have now been with the company for well over a decade. One of the major signs of a young person who has been with the company for that long is that they understand that the space is defined by us all. They not only expect Goat Track to provide a safe, fun, inclusive, supportive space; they also seek to be an active part of making Goat Track that space for themselves and others.
Every morning I wake up and am grateful for the fact that there are so many people who believe in the importance of growing the greatness of children and young people through creative empowerment. I also feel overcome with joy that a lot of people who believe this the most strongly are the children and young people themselves and that they don’t just want this for themselves, they want it for their friends too.
And that’s what creates a great culture.
